Update on my nephew
A bright and lovely person left the world today. My 29-year-old nephew Jon died at 5:30 this morning. The head injuries were too serious, the brain damage too profound for the doctors to save him. Please think of his mother and sister and brothers.

My brain is stuck in platitude mode and I can't think of anything eloquent to say, but thank you all for thinking of Jon. We're heading to L.A. next week, a trip that we'd already planned, and we're going to spend a day with Jon's mother.

Was he the one I met in the E. Village? I'm terribly sorry to hear about that. What happened?

No, Jon wasn't the one you met in the E. Village. That was David, my stepson. David and Jon were friends, though, and David's taking Jon's death very hard.

Jon was skateboarding at a concrete skate park in Phoenix and landed very hard on his head. Tanis and David and I had just seen him last September in New Mexico when we all went to the memorial for T's father. Jon was in his second year at motorcycle mechanic school, interested in learning how to design motorcycles, and bright and funny and very engaging. It's a terrible shame.

Thank you, Kris. T and I were already planning to go to Los Angeles next week to visit my father, so now we're also going to try our best to console my sister-in-law, who also lives in L.A.
